The Horse Did Not Make It

I just checked my cell phone voice mail -- I have had my cell turned off all weekend. There was a message from Dolly. She went out to check on the horse at 6 a.m., and he had passed on.

I am just sick over this. That poor thing.....it did NOT have to be this way....

What was the owners thoughts behind no vet call?

I am so sorry to hear that the horse didn't make it. Just know that you all did everything you could to try to save this horse. I can't believe the owners said not to call the vet, that is absolutely ridiculous.
You will be in my thoughts!

I am not sure what the rationale was behind no vet call. I suspect it is in part because of the dynamic between the horse owners D and K. K is really into horses and wants to have them --D is not, but only agreed to try to make K happy. So perhaps there is a bit of reluctance to make the horses a focus of resources. They told my friend they would be home the next day (today) so they would deal with the horse when they got here. so perhaps that is what they were thinking -- that they would have time to get him taken care of. I do not know for sure. but I did learn that the horse also had a thyroid problem in addition to being prone to foundering. It was not a healthy horse in the first place. So personally, any sign of illness would be way to scarey to leave to chance -- also, why put the stress of caring for a sick horse on friends to bear their own without benefit of a professional? Plus, if there was no hope, the poor horse could have had his misery ended rather than suffer for 24 hours. There is just so much wrong here....and the horse ended up paying the ultimate price.

I'm so sorry he didn't make it. But.. at least he is no longer suffering. I am glad that he had people around though to help, and it is nice to know that there ARE people out there that will be there when the chips are down.

What a terrible thing to do...leave a horse in the care of others and then NOT allow a vet to be called. These people should not be allowed to own ANY pets! So sorry you and all your friends had to go through this.

Hi there, it's been awhile since I've made my rounds to some of my favorite blogs! Boy, you have had your fair share of excitement lately! I'm so glad your situation with the wire fence worked out well but sorry to hear of the suffering (and nightmare you guys had to endure)for the horse that was down! Hope this year is a better one!
